Independent living

Independent living with help from an agency is a type of housing and support service that allows people with disabilities to live independently in the community. Agencies provide a variety of support options, such as housing, personal assistance, transportation, and advocacy.

Independent living can help people with disabilities live more independently and participate fully in the community. Agencies provide the support people need to achieve their goals and live the lives they want.

Some of the benefits of independent living with help from an agency include increased independence, improved quality of life, reduced isolation, and reduced stress.

If you are a person with a disability and are interested in independent living with help from an agency, there are a few things you can do: do your research, talk to your family and friends, and contact an agency.

Independent living with help from an agency can be a great way to live a more independent and fulfilling life.

History

In December 1995 Ordinary Living was created.

My vision was simple and real: to support people within a group home but to offer a total person centred approach.

Everyone is unique and everyone has their own individual journey.

Ordinary Living is about helping people to live their lives no matter what their disability is. For people to learn and maintain life skills. We focus on life quality, attainable goals, integration, the feel good factor and dealing with the complexities of life.

Regular keyworker meetings, person centred planning and constant reviewing: it is important to get things right and to realise that people needs change and we have to accommodate these changes.

Our house becomes a persons’ home. We don’t have big signs on the houses, nor do we have mini buses with advertising. We just have your everyday cars and your everyday homes. Steve Turner – Owner

Stephen Turner

Managing Director

Stephen Turner, a native of Okehampton, relocated to Eccleshall in Staffordshire at the tender age of seven. His educational journey began at Lonsdale Primary School, continued at Eccleshall Middle School, and culminated at Blessed William Howard in Stafford.

At sixteen, Stephen returned to his hometown of Okehampton. Despite periods of living in challenging conditions such as tents, bedsits, and caravans, he relocated to Exeter to pursue further studies and work. His professional journey spanned various sectors including restaurants, hotels, nursing homes, and retail, before he found his calling with the NHS Trust in Okehampton.

In 1995, Stephen embarked on a new venture. He moved to Appledore and established The Anchorage Residential Home in Bideford. His vision for a more supported living approach led him to open a series of non-residential supported living homes. Today, Stephen oversees seven homes and leads a dedicated team of 63 professionals, all working towards the realization of the Ordinary Living vision. As the Managing Director, Stephen continues to drive the mission of providing quality care and support to those in need.

I embarked on my professional journey with Ordinary Living over a span of 27 years ago when Stephen Turner initiated his tenure at Anchorage Bideford. During my tenure, I diligently undertook a multitude of administrative responsibilities, encompassing paperwork management, invoicing, and wage administration, alongside various other office-related tasks.

My dedication and commitment to Stephen Turner remained unwavering as we transitioned to the Westward Ho location. Subsequently, with the relocation of the business to Widemouth Bay, my role expanded significantly, and I have since assumed the crucial responsibility of meticulously calculating staff wages and managing annual leave accrual for the organization’s workforce. This journey has equipped me with invaluable experience and expertise in the field of administrative and human resource management.

In March 2007, I embarked on my professional journey with Ordinary Living, serving as a caregiver for adults with learning disabilities, autism, and challenging behaviours.

Over the course of 16 years, Ordinary Living has been instrumental in fostering my professional growth, enabling me to effectively cater to the needs of those I support.

My commitment to providing person-centred care was further enhanced by pursuing training and achieving National Vocational Qualifications in the Health and Care Sector. I began my journey as a Level 2 support worker and, through dedication and hard work, ascended to a managerial position upon completion of my Level 5 qualification.

Ordinary Living has not only been a workplace but also an extended family, encompassing numerous staff members and the individuals we support. I take immense pride in being a part of this extraordinary family, Ordinary Living.
